In morning dew the scarecrow combs his hair.

In the morning light the scarecrow looks so spry,

You know he had a good night’s sleep

He’s now in a fitter state to spy

On shouting monkeys and porcupine.

He gets to see everything all the time,

except his shadow which lazes about till the evening snuffs the fellow out.

Whether he sees the seasons come and go

is a thing you and I may never know.

But busy as he is, he keeps an eye

on all the bird traffic passing by.

Some questions always bother him:

How seasons come and go.

The way the seasons to and from

He doesn’t know who‘s getting in-

Summer, autumn or the snow?

Something he should surely know!

He knows he shivers in the cold

and in the summer he will fry.

Do seasons come up from the ground

Or do they drop down from the sky-

Are questions that have bothered him.

Answers do not dribble in.

To keep questions out and answers in

He bolts his upper story’s door.

Then he wonders why on Earth

His head goes round in circles for

While seasons circle round and round

Like oxen on a threshing floor.

- Keki N Daruwalla, In the Morning Dew”

One day in the peak of August, the Texas sun gleamed like a gem in the morning dew. On this day, the Boy finds himself running late, rushing to get to where he was getting to. But something about how this ray of light illuminated the morning mist —rising from the grass “like pearls on emerald fields,” made the Boy slow down.

For a moment, it felt to the Boy as if the universe was whispering to him, saying “…even as you speed through your days and possibly life, make sure you’re taking time for yourself, and acknowledge the beauty in the madness and most mundane.”

Late and all, the Boy not only slowed down but made a full stop to take a photo so as to always remember this cosmic moment and feeling of deep connection with his true self.

For a moment, it felt to the Boy as if the universe was whispering to him, saying “…even as you speed through your days and possibly life, make sure you’re taking time for yourself, and acknowledge the beauty in the madness and most mundane.”

This current chapter for the Boy is like that of sunlight in morning dew.

It’s also not lost on the Boy that this month marks year two of what he now calls his forced sabbatical. The Boy’s pilgrimage to selfhood and vocation meant journeying through the uncertainty of unemployment amist the global pandy, COVID-19, a move back to Texas, a false start on an MBA program, and possibly a new career pivot into fitness that seemed to not quiet math.

This current chapter for the Boy is like that of sunlight in morning dew. Forced to slow down, the Boy listens to his life and how this chapter will recall the whisper of moments when living meant embracing it all —the struggle or joy, the loss or gain, the darkness or light. This season for the Boy also meant learning anew how to tend his garden, guide his flock to grow, and let his life speak of a lifetime of moments when courage and self-care conquered fear and deep self-doubt. He needed this journey first before he could truly ‘come home.’

Forced to slow down, the Boy listens to his life and how this chapter will recall the whisper of moments when living meant embracing it all —the struggle or joy, the loss or gain, the darkness or light.
